Wallet safety basics
Updated 2026-04-24
A crypto wallet does not store coins. It stores the keys that prove you control an address on the blockchain. Whoever holds the keys controls the funds — which is why wallet security matters more than anything else.
Hot wallets
Apps and browser extensions connected to the internet. Convenient for small amounts and daily use, but exposed to malware and phishing.
Cold wallets
Hardware devices or paper backups kept offline. Slower to use, much harder to hack remotely.
Seed phrase rules
- Write it on paper or metal, never in a photo or cloud note.
- Store copies in two separate safe places.
- Never type it into a website — no legitimate support team will ask for it.
Approvals
When you connect a wallet to an app, you often grant permission to spend tokens. Review and revoke old approvals regularly.
